The Rise Back: Beyond Suicide
Tiffaney Childers on Suicide, Silence & Healing

What if grief isn't something we're meant to get over, but something we learn to live with?

We hear it all the time. Be strong. Give it time. Find closure. Move on. But what if those familiar expectations are part of what makes grief so difficult to navigate—not only for the people experiencing it, but for those trying to support them?

Kym Hinchey's story challenges much of what we've been taught about loss.

During the pandemic, she lost her son Adrian to an accidental overdose. Three months later, her husband John died suddenly. Then came the loss of her beloved dog, another deeply meaningful connection in a life already turned upside down.

What followed wasn't a neat progression through stages of grief. It was a deeply personal journey through heartbreak, survival, unanswered questions, unexpected moments of connection, and the gradual discovery that love and loss can coexist with joy and hope.

Today, as a certified grief educator, life coach, and author of Then and Now: The Evolution of Grief, Kym is helping others better understand what grief really looks and feels like.

🎙️ Throughout this conversation we explore:

  • The very different circumstances surrounding the loss of each of Tiffaney's parents

  • The love stories and relationships that shaped Kym's life before loss

  • Her son Adrian's struggles with addiction and the complexity of losing a child

  • The sudden loss of her husband John just three months later

  • How grief changes our sense of identity, time, and what the future might hold

  • The pressure to appear okay when we're anything but

  • Why grief doesn't follow a predictable timeline

  • What grieving people actually need from the people around them

  • Continuing bonds, meaningful signs, and the comfort of remembering

  • The importance of acknowledging pet loss and grief that others may not recognize

  • Finding purpose in helping others without pretending the pain has disappeared

One of the most meaningful threads running through this conversation is the difference between trying to make someone's grief better and simply being willing to be present with them in it.

Sometimes support isn't about finding the perfect words. It's about remembering a name. Sharing a story. Showing up months later. Making room for tears, laughter, anger, silence, and whatever else the moment holds.

Kym also reminds us that our relationships don't necessarily end when someone's physical presence does. Love can continue through memories, traditions, stories, and the ways the people we've lost continue to influence how we live. And perhaps that's one of the greatest lessons of all.

We don't have to choose between honoring the people we've lost and embracing the life that's still ours to live. Grief and gratitude. Heartbreak and hope. Love and loss. There can be room for all of it.
