Rooted in Love:
The Timely Gift of Katie
What creates a family? Biology, circumstance, or love?
We thought we knew the answer once. Life had other plans.
October has always carried a little more weight for us. After watching our mother face three different cancers over twelve years, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than an annual reminder. It's deeply personal. And so is the woman whose story we're revisiting.
When our mother, Marsha, died at just 47, neither of us could have imagined another woman eventually becoming such an important part of our lives. But then came Katie. She married Pop when we were already grown, bringing her own children, her own history, and a lifetime of experiences that had shaped the woman she was becoming. She had navigated motherhood, divorce, loss, breast cancer, and a double mastectomy. She had built a meaningful career and discovered that life rarely unfolds according to plan.
Katie never tried to replace our mother. She simply loved us, loved Pop, loved our children, and made room for something entirely new to grow. And over more than thirty years, that love became the foundation of a family none of us could have imagined.
🎙️ In this episode, we reflect on:
Katie's journey through breast cancer and a double mastectomy
The joys, challenges, and unexpected lessons of motherhood
Navigating loss, divorce, change, and new beginnings
The extraordinary relationship Katie and Pop built together
The sometimes complicated, often beautiful reality of blended families
Why family is about so much more than biology
The role of faith, gratitude, and perspective through life's hardest experiences
Finding joy in ordinary moments and refusing to let one difficult experience define an entire day
Aging, intentional living, and the wisdom that comes from embracing every season of life
The legacy of love we leave through the relationships we nurture
One of the most meaningful parts of Katie's story is the reminder that love doesn't have to compete with what came before it. Our mother will always be our mother. Her place in our lives and hearts is irreplaceable. And yet, there was room for Katie.
Room for another relationship.
Another kind of motherhood.
Another branch of our wonderfully complicated family bush.
Through the years, we've experienced our share of pruning and nurturing, loss and growth, heartbreak and celebration. But the roots have continued to deepen. Katie's perspective on life is equally meaningful. Through all she's experienced, she reminds us that one hard thing doesn't have to make the whole day bad. That gratitude isn't about denying difficulty. It's about recognizing that even on difficult days, life still offers something worth appreciating.
As we close Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're revisiting this conversation not only to honor the women whose lives have been touched by cancer, but to celebrate the relationships, resilience, and everyday moments that make life worth living. Because some of life's greatest gifts aren't the ones we planned for. They're the people who arrive, make room for love, and become part of our story forever.
This conversation with Katie Thomas is part of our original episode collection. We're sharing it again in October 2026 with a new introduction in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Listen to Katie's original episode.
