The Me Before Life Happened:
Jenny Cohen on Losing Yourself, Finding Your Way Back & Beginning Again

What if you could live an entire life without realizing you'd somehow lost touch with yourself?

Not because of one defining moment. But little by little—as life happens, responsibilities accumulate, other people need us, and survival sometimes asks us to become whoever we need to be just to keep moving forward.

For Jenny Cohen, recognizing that distance from herself took decades. Her story begins with childhood in Taiwan and immigration to the United States, where learning to adapt became part of learning to belong. It continues through dance and performance, career, marriage, motherhood, caregiving, cancer, family health crises, and the many roles she learned to inhabit along the way.

Eventually, Jenny came to understand that she wasn't simply trying to return to who she had been before breast cancer. She was searching for “the me before life happened.”

🎙️Throughout this conversation we explore:

  • How childhood, immigration, culture, and belonging helped shape Jenny's earliest sense of self

  • The difference between adapting to survive and knowing who we really are

  • Dance, movement, performance, and Jenny's evolving relationship with her body

  • The childhood wounds that can continue influencing us long after childhood ends

  • Love, marriage, caregiving, IVF, motherhood, and the identities we build around the people who need us

  • Cancer and the experiences that changed the way Jenny listened to herself

  • Parenting through serious health challenges, mental health crises, and her children's evolving identities

  • Why love sometimes asks us to be present rather than fix

  • Learning to stop “flying everyone else's plane”

  • The body as a “tuning fork” and a pathway back to greater awareness

  • Healing as something we practice rather than something we complete

  • Midlife as a “second spring”—and the possibilities that can emerge when we allow ourselves to begin agains

There is no clean dividing line between the person we were and the person life has asked us to become. The things we do to survive matter. The roles we inhabit matter. The people we love and care for matter. Even the ways we've learned to adapt can become important parts of who we are.

But Jenny's story also invites a different kind of curiosity:

  • What remains underneath all of it?

  • What happens when we stop managing everyone else's journey long enough to pay attention to our own?

  • When we listen to the body that's been carrying us all along?

  • When we stop shrinking from the applause and allow ourselves to be seen?

At 57, Jenny isn't trying to recreate an earlier version of herself. She's dancing. Creating. Helping others. Pursuing new possibilities. And, remarkably, stepping into a new chapter as a signed performer.

Maybe that's what finding our way back really means… not returning to who we were before life happened.
But bringing all we've lived back home to who we've always been.
