A Sister on the Edge: How a Brother's Fall Created a Rising Movement

Jonathan was vibrant, adventurous, and full of love—and in an instant, he was gone.

On January 27, 2024, Rebecca Fielding’s world was shattered when her younger brother Jonathan died in a tragic fall at Moonscape Overlook in eastern Utah. In the midst of unbearable grief, Rebecca made a choice that would carry his spirit forward…

She placed a journal at the site of his fall, writing a letter to Jonathan and leaving space for others to share their stories. That journal became Jonathan’s Journal—a testament to loss, love, and resilience. Over time, it traveled through countless hands, collecting letters, art, and reflections from strangers who connected with Jonathan’s story and left pieces of their own.

Even after the original journal was swept away in a flash flood—poetically fulfilling Jonathan’s wish to “become a river”—his legacy continued. Today, Rebecca honors her brother through her photography project Through Johnny’s Eyes, through courageous acts of healing (including a 400-foot cliff jump in Moab), and by sharing his story with those who need it most..

🎙️ In this powerful episode of The P-I-G, Rebecca reflects on:

  • The day everything changed at Moonscape Overlook.

  • How grief reshaped her as a sister and daughter.

  • The creation and journey of Jonathan’s Journal.

  • The surprising role of strangers in carrying us through loss.

  • The enduring truth that Jonathan’s love was enough to last a lifetime.

Rebecca’s story is a reminder that even in the most devastating loss, we can choose to create something lasting, something healing, and something that ensures our loved one’s light never goes out.
